  • Blood Sampling: Researchers draw blood at frequent, predetermined intervals after administration to measure the concentration of the active ingredient in the plasma.
  • Data Analysis: Pharmacokinetic parameters are calculated. The two most critical metrics are Cmax (the maximum concentration of the drug in the blood) and AUC (the total exposure to the drug over time).

Statistical Thresholds

To be considered bioequivalent, the generic drug's pharmacokinetic parameters must fall within specific statistical boundstypically 80% to 125% of the values observed for the brand-name drug. This is not a measure of how "good" the drug is, but rather a measure of how closely it matches the performance of the established reference product.

The Importance of Regulatory Oversight

Bioequivalence trials are strictly monitored to ensure data integrity and participant safety. Ethical oversight, including Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval and informed consent, is mandatory. By mandating these trials, regulatory bodies provide the public with confidence that generic medications are high-quality, safe, and effective alternatives that help reduce healthcare costs without compromising patient health.
