DCFS Scholarship Program

Program Overview

The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to eligible youth who have been in the care of DCFS and are pursuing postsecondary education. The goal is to remove economic barriers, encourage highereducation attainment, and support a successful transition into independent adulthood.

Since its inception, the program has helped thousands of students enroll in community colleges, universities, trade schools, and apprenticeship programs. Funding can be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies, transportation, and in some cases, room and board.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the DCFS Scholarship, applicants must meet **all** of the following criteria:

  • Be a former or current DCFS client (including foster care, kinship care, or other stateadministered placement).
  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen.
  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited postsecondary institution.
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (or the equivalent required by the school).
  • Demonstrate financial need through the FAFSA or a stateapproved alternative.
  • Agree to the scholarship terms, including periodic academic progress reports.

Students who have already earned a bachelors degree may be eligible for a **Graduate Assistance award** if they are pursuing a second bachelors, certificate, or graduate degree that advances their career goals.

What the Scholarship Covers

Funding amounts vary based on need, school costs, and available state resources. Typical award components include:

  • Tuition & fees: Up to the full cost of instate tuition at public institutions.

  • Transportation: Reimbursement for approved commuting expenses.
  • Room & board: Partial assistance for students living offcampus.
