Frederick W. & Grace P. Brecht Scholarship

The Frederick W. and Grace P. Brecht Scholarship is a meritbased award that supports undergraduate students pursuing studies in the liberal arts and sciences. Established in 1998 by the philanthropic couple Frederick W. Brecht, a retired engineer, and his wife Grace P. Brecht, a former educator, the scholarship reflects their lifelong belief that a broad-based education cultivates critical thinking, civic responsibility, and personal growth.

Rooted in the Brechts commitment to equal opportunity, the scholarship aims to:

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Enrollment: Must be a fulltime undergraduate student at a participating university or college.
  2. Academic Standing: Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
  3. Major: Open to all majors in the liberal arts and sciences; specific emphasis may be placed on majors related to environmental studies, public policy, or humanities.
  4. Financial Need: While the scholarship is primarily meritbased, applicants must submit a FAFSA or equivalent financialneed statement.
  5. Community Involvement: Demonstrated commitment to community service, leadership, or extracurricular activities.
  6. Residency: U.S. citizens or permanent residents; international students may be considered on a casebycase basis.

Application Process

Applications are accepted annually from January 1 to March 31. The process consists of the following steps:

1. Online Application Form

Students create an account on the scholarship portal, providing personal information, academic transcripts, and a rsum.

2. Personal Statement

A 500word essay answering the prompt: How will the Brecht Scholarship enable you to achieve your academic and career goals, and how do you plan to give back to your community?

3. Letters of Recommendation

Two letters are required: one from a faculty member familiar with the applicants academic work and one from a community leader or supervisor who can speak to the applicants service and leadership.

4. Financial Documentation

Applicants must upload a recent FAFSA report or an equivalent document demonstrating financial need.

5. Interview (optional)

A shortlist of candidates may be invited to a virtual interview with a selection committee member.

All materials must be submitted electronically via the portal. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Selection Committee

The committee is composed of three members:

  • A faculty representative from the applicants institution.
  • A senior staff member from the Brecht Family Foundation.
  • An alumnus who previously received the Brecht Scholarship.

The committee evaluates each applicant based on academic achievement, leadership, community involvement, and the clarity of the personal statement. Decisions are announced by May 15, and awards are disbursed at the beginning of the fall semester.
