J.O.McClurkan Academic Scholarship

History & Purpose

The scholarship was founded in 1998 by the late Dr. James O. McClurkan, a distinguished educator and philanthropist who believed that education is the most powerful catalyst for personal and societal transformation. Dr. McClurkans original endowment was intended to honor his legacy by supporting bright, motivated students at all levels of postsecondary study.

Key objectives of the scholarship include:

• Encouraging academic rigor and intellectual curiosity.
• Fostering leadership qualities within campus and community settings.
• Reducing financial barriers to higher education.
• Creating a network of alumni who give back to future scholars.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States (or eligible international student as defined by the host institution).
• Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
• Be enrolled fulltime in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program.
• Demonstrate leadership through extracurricular activities, volunteer work, or campus involvement.
• Submit a personal essay (500800 words) describing academic goals, career aspirations, and how the scholarship will impact the applicants future.
• Provide two letters of recommendationone from an academic instructor and one from a community or professional mentor.
• Agree to participate in annual scholarship events and mentorship programs.

Application Process

The application cycle runs from early October to early January each year. Follow these steps to apply:

1. Create an account on the scholarship portal (link provided below).
2. Upload official transcripts and proof of enrollment.
3. Enter personal details and academic information.
4. Write and submit the personal essay.
5. Upload the two required letters of recommendation.
6. Review the application for completeness and submit.

All applications are reviewed by a committee of faculty, alumni, and representatives of the McClurkan Foundation. Final decisions are announced by the end of March.

Benefits & Award Details

Each selected scholar receives a renewable award of up to $5,000 per academic year. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years, provided the recipient maintains a minimum GPA of 3.5 and continues to meet the programs leadership and service expectations.
