Biography
Ryu Kyoung Mu was born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1984. From an early age he displayed a fascination with both traditional Korean brushwork and the graphic language of modern street art. After completing a degree in Fine Arts at Hongik University, he traveled across Europe and Japan, absorbing a range of visual cultures that would later become the backbone of his hybrid style.
His upbringing in a family of craftsmenhis father a woodworker and his mother a textile designerinstilled in him a respect for materiality and process. This background continues to shape his approach, whether he is painting on canvas, sculpting in metal, or curating digital installations.
Career Highlights
Early Exhibitions (20062010)
Ryu's first solo show, Echoes of Han, opened at a modest gallery in Insadong. The exhibition combined ink wash paintings with mixedmedia collages, earning critical notice for its fresh reinterpretation of Korean heritage.
International Breakthrough (20132017)
In 2013, he was selected for the Venice Biennales Emerging Voices section. His installation Neon Seoul used LED panels to project historic calligraphy onto the walls of the Giardini, creating a dialogue between past and future.
Following this, Ryu collaborated with the Japanese fashion house Uniqlo for a limitededition Tshirt line that featured his signature brushstroke motifs. The collection sold out within weeks, introducing his work to a global consumer audience.
