Program Overview
In response to the growing demand for Mandarin proficiency worldwide, many Taiwanese universities launched a comprehensive online Chinese language program for the year 2021. The initiative combined the strengths of Taiwans expertise in Mandarin teaching, its vibrant cultural heritage, and modern elearning tools. It was designed for learners ranging from complete beginners to advanced speakers wishing to refine their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
Key goals of the 2021 program were:
- Provide highquality instruction that mirrors oncampus classes.
- Offer flexible scheduling to accommodate students in different time zones.
- Integrate authentic Taiwanese cultural content, from nightmarket cuisine to traditional festivals.
- Use interactive technology to foster realtime communication between teachers and classmates.
Curriculum Structure
The curriculum was divided into three main levels, each with four modules lasting eight weeks. Each module consisted of 45 hours of live instruction per week, supplemented by recorded lectures, quizzes, and selfstudy materials.

Special thematic workshops were offered throughout the year, such as Taiwanese Food and Culture, Traditional Arts & Folklore, and Business Mandarin for Startups. Participants could earn certificates of completion that were recognized by partner universities in Taiwan and abroad.
Technology & Platform
The program relied on a blended learning environment powered by the following tools:
- Zoom for live lectures, breakout rooms, and realtime Q&A.
- Moodle as the central learning management system, housing recordings, reading materials, and discussion forums.
- Quizlet for vocabulary flashcards and spacedrepetition practice.
- Padlet for collaborative projects, allowing students to post videos, images, and written reflections.
All sessions were recorded and uploaded within 24 hours, giving students the flexibility to review content at their own pace. Technical support was available 24/7 via a dedicated help desk.
Admission, Fees & Scholarships
Application opened on March 1, 2021, and closed on May 15, 2021. Prospective students completed an online form, submitted a short video introduction in Mandarin (or English for beginners), and paid a nonrefundable application fee of US$30.
Program fees varied by level:
- Beginner: US$1,200 per 8week module.
- Intermediate: US$1,500 per 8week module.
- Advanced: US$1,800 per 8week module.
Discounts were offered for early registration (10% off) and for enrolling in multiple modules (15% off the total). A limited number of meritbased scholarships covering up to 50% of tuition were awarded to students with outstanding academic records or demonstrated financial need.
Student Experience & Success Stories
Feedback from the 2021 cohort highlighted the programs strong sense of community despite the virtual setting. Learners appreciated the opportunity to practice speaking with native Taiwanese instructors and to receive personalized feedback on written assignments.
