Why Lead in Drinking Water Matters
Lead is a potent neurotoxin. Children absorb it more easily than adults, and even low levels can affect brain development, behavior, and academic performance. Schools and childcare centers are where children spend most of their day, making safe drinking water a nonnegotiable priority.
The 3Ts framework**Test, Treat, Train**offers a clear, actionable path for administrators, facilities staff, and parents to protect childrens health.
1. Test: Know Whats in Your Water
When to Test
- At the start of each school year.
- After any plumbing work, renovations, or pipe replacements.
- Whenever a waterfaucet shows discoloration, metallic taste, or rusty residue.
- When a state or local health department issues a lead advisory.
How to Test
- Certified laboratories: Collect firstdraw samples (water that has been standing for at least 6 hours) from each faucet that serves drinking water. Use EPAapproved sampling bottles and follow chainofcustody procedures.
- Onsite testing kits: Useful for quick screening but must be confirmed by a certified lab for compliance.
- State programs: Many states run free or lowcost testing for schools. Contact your health department for details.
What to look for: The EPA action level for lead in drinking water is 15g/L (parts per billion). Any result at or above this level triggers remedial action.
2. Treat: Reduce Lead to Safe Levels
Immediate Controls
- Flush the tap: Run water for at least 30 seconds before drinking, especially if the water has been static for more than 6hours.
- Cold water only: Use only cold water for drinking and cooking; hot water leaches lead faster.
