What is AAFCO?
The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is a nongovernmental organization that develops model regulations for pet food and establishes nutrient profiles that define the minimum (and sometimes maximum) levels of essential nutrients required for dogs and cats at various life stages. Although AAFCO does not test or certify products, its standards are adopted by state feed control authorities in the United States, making them the defacto benchmark for pet food adequacy.
AAFCO Nutrient Profiles
AAFCO publishes separate profiles for:
- Dogs growth, maintenance, and reproduction.
- Cats growth, maintenance, and reproduction.

How to Interpret Pet Food Labels Using AAFCO Standards
Pet food labels in the US contain a Statement of Nutritional Adequacy that must reference an AAFCO profile. The statement usually reads one of two ways:
- Formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles indicates the product meets or exceeds the selected lifestage profile.
- Complete and balanced for (e.g., maintenance or growth) confirms the formula is suitable for that specific life stage.
If a label lacks this statement, the product has not been officially evaluated against the profiles. In such cases, consult a veterinarian before feeding it as the sole diet.
Dog vs. Cat Nutrient Requirements
While both species are carnivorous to varying degrees, their physiological needs differ considerably.
Protein & Amino Acids
Cats require higher protein percentages and essential amino acids such as taurine, arginine, and methionine. Dogs can synthesize some of these from other nutrients, so their minimum protein threshold is lower.
Vitamins
Vitamin A is a classic example: cats need preformed retinol from animal tissue; dogs can convert betacarotene from plant sources. Similarly, cats cannot synthesize adequate niacin and must obtain it directly from the diet.
Fatty Acids
Both species need omega6 and omega3 fatty acids, but cats have a higher requirement for arachidonic acid, a fatty acid they cannot produce.
Minerals
Calcium to phosphorus ratios are similar, but cats are more sensitive to excessive magnesium, which can predispose them to urinary crystals.
