History

Acharya Nagarjuna University came into being on September 11, 1976, through the Andhra Pradesh Universities Act No. 43 of 1976. It was carved out of Andhra University and initially had jurisdiction over several districts including Guntur, Krishna, Prakasam, and parts of Nellore and Kurnool.

The university is named after Acharya Nagarjuna, a profounder of the Madhyamika philosophy which is considered one of the important schools of Mahayana Buddhism. His philosophical works and commentaries have had a profound influence on Buddhist thought across Asia.

In its early years, the university operated from rented buildings before moving to its permanent campus at Nagarjunanagar. The campus development gained momentum in the 1980s with the construction of academic buildings, administrative blocks, and laboratories.
