Course Overview

APEnvironmental Science (APES) is a collegelevel introductory course that examines the interrelationships of the natural world, the impact of human activity, and the use of scientific principles to evaluate environmental solutions. The course is designed for highschool students who are interested in biology, chemistry, earth science, and public policy. It aligns with the College Boards AP framework and is recognized by many colleges for credit or placement.

Key idea: APES emphasizes datadriven decision making, critical thinking, and realworld applications, not just memorization of facts.

Curriculum Topics

The College Board organizes the course into four major units. Below is a concise summary of each.

  2. FreeResponse Section 3 tasks in 90 minutes (20 minutes of planning, 40 minutes of writing, 30 minutes of editing). Tasks include:

    • Designing an investigation or solution to a specific environmental problem.

The exam is scored on a 5point scale. A score of 3 or higher is generally considered passing for college credit.
