Alaska Mathematics Standards

Guidelines for K12 Mathematics Learning in the State of Alaska

The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) has organized its mathematics standards into four grade bands. Each band outlines the concepts, skills, and understandings that students should master before moving on to the next level. The standards are aligned with national frameworks and emphasize problem solving, reasoning, and the ability to communicate mathematically.

Grades K2: Foundations for Mathematical Thinking

Early elementary years focus on concrete experiences and the development of number sense. The standards are grouped into three domains:

  • Number Sense and Operations: Counting, recognizing numerals, understanding cardinality, and beginning addition and subtraction within 20.
  • Geometry and Measurement: Identifying shapes, describing attributes (sides, corners), comparing lengths, and using nonstandard units.
  • Data Analysis and Probability: Sorting objects, creating simple tallies, and interpreting basic picture graphs.

Assessment focuses on oral explanations, manipulatives, and visual representations. Teachers are encouraged to integrate mathematical talk throughout daily routines and to connect math to realworld contexts such as grocery shopping or measuring ingredients.

Grades 35: Expanding Operations and Introductory Algebra

Students transition from concrete to more abstract reasoning. The standards are organized into four strands:

  • Numbers and Operations: Multiplication and division facts, multidigit addition/subtraction, fractions, and decimals.
  • Algebraic Thinking: Identifying patterns, using variables in simple equations, and solving onestep problems.
  • Geometry and Measurement: Classifying 2D and 3D shapes, calculating perimeter, area, volume, and converting units.
  • Data and Probability: Collecting data, constructing line plots, bar graphs, and interpreting results.

Instructional strategies include the use of number lines, area models, and technology tools such as virtual manipulatives. Emphasis is placed on developing procedural fluency while also fostering conceptual understanding.

Grades 68: PreAlgebra and Proportional Reasoning

Middle school standards prepare students for highschool algebra and geometry. They are divided into five major areas:

  • Rational Numbers: Operations with fractions, decimals, and integers; understanding absolute value.
  • Expressions and Equations: Simplifying expressions, solving multistep linear equations and inequalities, and using proportional relationships.
  • Functions: Interpreting tables, graphs, and equations; introducing the concept of a function.
  • Geometry: Reasoning about angles, similarity, transformations, and the Pythagorean Theorem.
  • Data Analysis and Statistics: Measures of central tendency, variability, and basic probability models.

Students work with both concrete and abstract models, and are expected to justify their reasoning verbally and in writing. Collaborative problemsolving and the integration of technology (graphing calculators, online simulations) are core components of instruction.

High School: Comprehensive Mathematics Pathways

Alaska offers multiple highschool pathways to accommodate diverse postsecondary goals. The standards are grouped by course:

  • Algebra I & II: Linear, quadratic, exponential, and polynomial functions; systems of equations; rational expressions.
  • Geometry: Formal proof, congruence, similarity, coordinate geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Advanced Algebra/PreCalculus: Complex numbers, functions and inverses, sequences, series, and introductory limits.
  • Calculus (AP or equivalent): Differentiation, integration, applications, and the fundamental theorem of calculus.
  • Statistics & Probability (incl. AP Statistics): Data collection, descriptive statistics, inferential methods, and probability distributions.

Each course emphasizes rigorous problem solving, mathematical modeling, and communication. Assessment includes a mix of timed exams, projects, and portfolio tasks. The standards also require students to apply mathematics to realworld situations, such as financial literacy, environmental data analysis, and engineering design challenges.

Implementation and Support

Alaska DEED provides professional development, curriculum resources, and assessment tools aligned with these standards. Schools are encouraged to use a blended approach that combines direct instruction, inquirybased learning, and technology integration. Progress monitoring tools help educators identify gaps early and differentiate instruction accordingly.

By following the Alaska Mathematics Standards, educators ensure that learners develop the reasoning, fluency, and problemsolving abilities needed for success in higher education, the workforce, and everyday life.
