Guidelines for K12 Mathematics Learning in the State of Alaska The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) has organized its mathematics standards into four grade bands. Students transition from concrete to more abstract reasoning. Collaborative problemsolving and the integration of technology (graphing calculators, online simulations) are core components of instruction. Alaska offers multiple highschool pathways to accommodate diverse postsecondary goals. The standards are grouped by course: Each course emphasizes rigorous problem solving, mathematical modeling, and communication. Assessment includes a mix of timed exams, projects, and portfolio tasks. The standards also require students to apply mathematics to realworld situations, such as financial literacy, environmental data analysis, and engineering design challenges. Alaska DEED provides professional development, curriculum resources, and assessment tools aligned with these standards. Schools are encouraged to use a blended approach that combines direct instruction, inquirybased learning, and technology integration.
