Mission & Vision

Alberta Transportation (AT) is the provincial ministry responsible for the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of the provinces road, rail and airport infrastructure. Its core mission is to provide a safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation network that supports economic growth, enables the movement of people and goods, and enhances the quality of life for Albertans.

Highway System

Albertas highway network spans more than 34,000 kilometres of paved and unpaved roads. It includes:

• Provincial highways: 199, which link major cities such as Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, and Fort McMurray.
• Secondary highways: Rural routes that connect small towns and agricultural hubs to the primary network.
• Gravel roads: Vital for remote communities and resourcebased operations, especially in the north.

These routes are strategically designed to support the provinces key sectorsenergy, agriculture, tourism, and forestryby providing reliable access to markets, ports, and service centres.

Key Services

Road Maintenance & Renewal

AT oversees routine maintenance (pothole repair, snow removal, signage replacement) and longterm renewal projects such as resurfacing, bridge rehabilitation, and pavement thinning to extend the service life of critical corridors.

Traffic Management

Advanced traffic monitoring systems, including loop detectors, video cameras, and realtime data feeds, allow the ministry to respond quickly to incidents, manage congestion, and disseminate travel information through the 511 Alberta service.

Infrastructure Planning

Through the Alberta Transportation Master Plan, the ministry conducts demand forecasting, environmental assessments, and costbenefit analyses to prioritize new corridors, upgrades, and multimodal connections.

Funding & Partnerships

AT collaborates with municipal governments, Indigenous groups, and privatesector partners to leverage funding. Sharedcost agreements, publicprivate partnerships, and federal contributions help deliver projects that exceed provincial budget constraints.

Several highprofile initiatives are shaping Albertas transportation landscape:

• North-South Connector (Highway 2X): A 200km expressway linking Calgary to Edmonton with a dedicated freight lane to accommodate increased oilsand traffic.
• Ring Road Expansion around Calgary: Completion of the West Ring Road, adding 35 km of fourlane highway and new interchanges to reduce innercity congestion.
• Fort McMurray Corridor Upgrade: Reinforced pavement and wildlife crossing structures to improve safety on the route to the northeastern resource hub.
• Rural Gravel Road Program: Conversion of 150 km of severely eroded gravel roads to allweather surfaces for better yearround access.

Each project incorporates climateresilient design features such as improved drainage, hightemperature asphalt mixes, and integration of electricvehicle charging stations at major rest areas.

Road Safety Initiatives

Safety is a cornerstone of ATs mandate. The ministry employs a multilayered approach:

• Speed Management: Installation of speedfeedback signs, variable speed limits on highrisk stretches, and increased enforcement in accident hotspots.
• Wildlife Mitigation: Overpasses, underpasses, and fencing to reduce vehiclewildlife collisions, particularly in the boreal forest region.
• Driver Education Partnerships: Collaboration with the Ministry of Education to incorporate roadsafety curricula into highschool programs.
