Understanding AQA A-Level PE Mark Descriptors

Achieving success in AQA A-Level Physical Education requires more than just subject knowledge. Students must understand how examiners assess their work. The mark descriptors are the bridge between the content you have learned and the grade you receive. This guide outlines how these descriptors function across different question types.

The Assessment Objectives (AOs)

Before diving into marks, you must understand what AQA is looking for. Every question is mapped to one or more of these three objectives:

  • AO1: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin performance and involvement in physical activity and sport.
  • AO2: Apply knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin performance and involvement in physical activity and sport.
  • AO3: Analyse and evaluate factors that underpin performance and involvement in physical activity and sport.

Extended Response Questions

For high-tariff questions (typically 8 to 15 marks), examiners use "levels of response" mark schemes. Instead of ticking off individual points, examiners judge the quality of your answer as a whole against specific descriptors.

Level Descriptor
Level 3 (High) Detailed, accurate knowledge (AO1). Strong application to the sporting context (AO2). Sustained, logical analysis or evaluation (AO3).
Level 2 (Mid) Relevant knowledge (AO1). Some application (AO2). Analysis is present but may be superficial or lack depth (AO3).
Level 1 (Low) Basic knowledge (AO1). Limited or no application (AO2). Little to no analysis (AO3).

Key Success Factors

AO1 (Knowledge): Use subject-specific terminology. If you are discussing energy systems, ensure you use accurate technical terms like 'glycolysis', 'ATP resynthesis', or 'anaerobic threshold'. Definitions alone are rarely enough for top marks.

AO2 (Application): This is where many students lose marks. You must link your knowledge to the specific sport mentioned in the question. If the question asks about a 100m sprinter, don't just talk about fast-twitch fibers; explain *why* they are beneficial for that specific explosive event.

AO3 (Analysis/Evaluation): To reach the top level, you must provide a balanced view. Use evaluative words such as 'however', 'consequently', or 'on the other hand'. Do not just describe a training method; discuss its advantages and disadvantages relative to the performer's goals.

Strategies for Maximizing Marks

  • Plan your answers: For 12-15 mark questions, take two minutes to outline your argument. This ensures your answer follows a logical flow.
  • Address the Command Words: Look for keywords like 'Assess', 'Discuss', or 'Evaluate'. 'Evaluate' requires you to weigh up the evidence and reach a justified conclusion. 'Discuss' asks for multiple sides of an argument.
  • Be Specific: Avoid vague statements like "it helps the athlete." Instead, explain *how* it helpse.g., "it improves the aerobic capacity of the athlete, allowing for a higher intensity of play during the final stages of a match."

By consistently aligning your exam technique with these descriptors, you move from merely recalling facts to demonstrating the higher-level synthesis that AQA examiners reward with top grades.
