Welcome to Basic French (CEFN 102)

CEFN 102 is an introductory course designed for students who wish to build a solid foundation in the French language. This course focuses on developing basic communicative competence while introducing learners to the rich culture of the Francophone world.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases.
• Introduce themselves and others and ask questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know, and things they have.
• Interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly.
• Write short, simple sentences and basic correspondence.

Core Curriculum

The course is structured around four primary linguistic pillars:

1. Listening and Speaking

Students will practice pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm through interactive dialogue exercises. We emphasize practical oral communication, including greeting people, ordering food, and navigating public transportation.

2. Reading Comprehension

Learners will explore short texts, advertisements, and dialogues. The goal is to identify main ideas and key vocabulary rather than translating word-for-word.

3. Writing Skills

Exercises include filling out forms, writing short postcards, and composing brief self-introductions. Grammar lessons are integrated into writing tasks to ensure practical application.

4. Cultural Awareness

Language cannot be separated from culture. CEFN 102 provides snapshots of daily life in France and other French-speaking regions, covering topics such as food, holidays, and social etiquette.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is continuous throughout the semester to ensure steady progress. Students are evaluated via:

• Weekly vocabulary and grammar quizzes.
• Two major mid-term oral presentations.
• A final comprehensive written exam covering reading, writing, and listening comprehension.
• Participation in class discussions and role-playing activities.
