In a world that values standardized tests and linear progression, we often forget that the most revolutionary ideas do not come from following a straight line. They come from stepping sideways. This is the essence of lateral thinking.
Lateral thinking is a manner of solving problems through an indirect and creative approach. Unlike vertical thinking, which is driven by logic and step-by-step analysis, lateral thinking is about disrupting standard thought patterns to look at things from a new, unexpected angle.
The term was coined by Maltese psychologist Edward de Bono in 1967. He presented the concept as a way to break away from the rigid "algorthimic" state of mind that relies heavily on past experiences. While vertical thinking digs the same hole deeper, lateral thinking tries to dig a hole somewhere else entirely.
To truly understand lateral thinking, it is helpful to contrast it with the traditional method: vertical thinking.
Both methods are necessary. Vertical thinking is excellent for developing and refining an idea once it has been found. Lateral thinking, however, is required to find that idea in the first place.
Lateral thinking is not a magical talent possessed by a few; it is a skill that can be practiced. Edward de Bono outlined several specific techniques to foster this mindset:
Most people stop looking for solutions once they find one that works. The "Alternatives" technique forces you to keep looking. Even if a solution is adequate, you consciously set it aside to find a different way to achieve the same result. This builds a habit of conceptual flexibility.
Challenging does not mean criticizing or finding faults. It means questioning the status quo. Why do things have to be done this way? Is this rule absolutely necessary, or is it just a tradition? By challenging the boundaries and assumptions we take for granted, we open up space for innovation.
This is perhaps the most famous lateral thinking tool. It involves making a deliberately reckless or illogical statement (a "provocation") to jump-start the brain. For example, one might say, "Cars should have square wheels." In a logical debate, this is nonsense. In lateral thinking, you examine this statement: "Square wheels would bump up and down. How can we use that bumping motion?" This might lead to an idea for a new suspension system or a fuel-efficient engine that generates energy from the bumps. In lateral thinking, we use the word "PO" (Provocative Operation) to signal that we are moving outside judgement.
When you are stuck on a problem, your mind loops through the same associated concepts. To break the loop, you introduce a totally random objectlike a picture of a butterfly or a noun like "cement"and force yourself to find a connection between that object and your problem. This randomness disrupts the neural pathways of standard thinking and creates novel bridges.
In the modern workplace and society, the problems we face are often complex and unique. We cannot rely solely on historical data to solve future challenges. Artificial Intelligence is excellent at vertical thinking; it can process logic and data faster than any human. However, AI currently struggles with the empathy-driven, context-breaking leaps of lateral thinking.
Therefore, human creativity becomes our most valuable asset. Lateral thinking allows us to innovate in business, create breakthroughs in science, and navigate personal life changes without being paralyzed by the fear of being "wrong."
A famous anecdote often used to illustrate lateral thinking involves the of a truck stuck under a low bridge. The truck was wedged tightly. Engineers and experts gathered, arguing about whether to cut the roof of the truck or dismantle the bridge. Both were expensive and time-consuming solutions.
A child passing by looked at the scene and offered a lateral solution: "Why not let the air out of the tires?"
The adults were trapped in their assumption that the structure had to change. The child changed the parameters of the truck (the height) instead. This simple shift in perspective solved the immediate problem without any damage.
Lateral thinking is the art of looking where no one else is looking. It requires courage to say things that might sound silly, and discipline to follow those silly thoughts to potentially brilliant conclusions. By practicing the techniques of alternatives, challenge, provocation, and random entry, anyone can train their mind to escape the trap of linear logic. In doing so, we do not just solve problems betterwe discover possibilities that never existed before.
