Bilingual English Language Teaching

What is Bilingual English Language Teaching?

Bilingual English language teaching (BELT) refers to instructional approaches that intentionally use two languagestypically the learners native language (L1) and English (L2)to facilitate the acquisition of English while maintaining and developing proficiency in the first language. Unlike immersion programs, which aim for exclusive use of the target language, BELT recognises the cognitive and cultural value of the L1 as a resource for learning.

The goal is not to replace the mothertongue, but to add English as a complementary tool for communication and thought.

Key Benefits

1. Cognitive Advantages

  • Enhanced executive function bilingual learners often show stronger problemsolving and multitasking abilities.
  • Metalinguistic awareness comparing structures across languages deepens understanding of grammar and vocabulary.

2. Academic Achievement

  • Research indicates that students who develop strong L1 literacy transfer those skills to L2 reading and writing.
  • Higher motivation and lower anxiety when teachers acknowledge and use learners home language.

3. Cultural and Social Inclusion

  • Students retain a sense of identity, reducing the risk of cultural alienation.
  • Classroom becomes a space where diverse linguistic backgrounds are valued, fostering mutual respect.

Effective Teaching Methods

Translanguaging

Translanguaging encourages fluid movement between languages. Teachers can model sentences in both languages, ask students to explain concepts first in L1, then reformulate in English.

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)

Students learn a subject (e.g., science) through English while using their L1 for clarification. This dualfocus promotes meaningful language use.

Contrastive Analysis

Identify similarities and differences between the two languages. Explicitly teaching false cognates or divergent word order helps avoid fossilisation of errors.

Scaffolded Interaction

Use visual aids, graphic organizers, and sentence frames in both languages. Pair stronger L1 speakers with weaker ones to support peer learning.

TaskBased Learning

Design authentic taskssuch as planning a trip or creating a bilingual posterwhere language is a tool rather than the focus.

Common Challenges and Solutions

Balancing Language Use

Overreliance on L1 can stall English development. Set clear language goals, allocate specific Englishonly segments, and monitor progress.

Teacher Proficiency

Teachers may be strong in English but less confident in the students L1. Professional development, coteaching, or using community language assistants can bridge the gap.

Curriculum Alignment

Standardised exams often assess English in isolation. Integrate bilingual activities that still meet exam criteria by linking them to the same learning outcomes.

Resource Availability

Limited bilingual textbooks can be mitigated by using adaptable openaccess materials, online corpora, and locally created content.
