Bloom's Taxonomy: A Framework for Learning Assessment
Bloom's Taxonomy is a hierarchical model used by educators to classify educational goals and objectives into levels of complexity and specificity. Originally developed in 1956 by Benjamin Bloom and a committee of educators, the framework was revised in 2001 to better align with the needs of the 21st-century classroom.
The Purpose of the Taxonomy
The primary utility of Blooms Taxonomy is to help instructors move students beyond simple rote memorization. By using this framework, teachers can create assessments that measure whether a student truly understands a concept, can apply it in new situations, or can use it to create something entirely original.
The Six Levels of Cognitive Processing
The revised taxonomy consists of six levels, ranging from the most basic cognitive function to the most advanced:
- Remembering: Retrieving relevant knowledge from long-term memory. This involves recognizing or recalling facts, terms, and basic concepts.
- Understanding: Determining the meaning of instructional messages. This involves interpreting, classifying, summarizing, and explaining information.
- Applying: Carrying out or using a procedure in a given situation. This moves the learner from theory to practice.
- Analyzing: Breaking material into constituent parts and detecting how the parts relate to one another and to an overall structure or purpose.
- Evaluating: Making judgments based on criteria and standards. This involves checking, critiquing, and monitoring the validity of an argument.
- Creating: Putting elements together to form a novel, coherent whole or an original product. This represents the pinnacle of cognitive complexity.
Why It Matters for Assessment
Assessments should not only focus on the lower levels of remembering and understanding. To foster deep learning, educators should design activities and tests that require students to demonstrate higher-order thinking skills. By diversifying assessment methods, teachers can gain a clearer picture of student mastery across the entire cognitive spectrum.
Practical Application
When designing a curriculum, instructors often use action verbs associated with each level to create learning outcomes. For example:
- For Remembering, an instructor might ask students to "list" or "define."
- For Applying, an instructor might ask students to "solve" or "demonstrate."
- For Creating, an instructor might ask students to "design," "construct," or "formulate."
By mapping assessment questions to these specific cognitive levels, educators ensure that their evaluations are both balanced and rigorous, ultimately preparing students for real-world problem-solving and critical thinking.
