Board of Education Minutes

1. Call to Order

The regular meeting of the Board of Education was called to order at 7:00p.m. in the Board Room, 123 Main Street. Present were President Jane M. Torres, VicePresident Mark L. Daniels, and board members Susan K. Reid, Kevin P. ONeil, and Anita R. Patel. Superintendent Dr. Luis M. Herrera was in attendance.

2. Roll Call & Quorum

All five board members were present, establishing a quorum as required by the bylaws.

3. Approval of Minutes Previous Meeting

The minutes of the November102020 board meeting were reviewed. A motion was made by VicePresident Daniels and seconded by Reid to approve the minutes as presented. The motion carried unanimously.

4. Superintendent Appointment

Following the retirement of Superintendent Elaine G. Ortiz effective September302020, the Board initiated a search for her replacement. After a competitive interview process, the Board selected Dr. Luis M. Herrera, former Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, to serve as the new Superintendent.

Resolution: Resolved, that Dr. Luis M. Herrera be appointed Superintendent of the District, effective October12020, and that the Board authorizes the execution of a threeyear contract with annual salary of $165,000, subject to annual performance reviews.

The resolution was moved by President Torres, seconded by Patel, and approved unanimously.

5. Donation Approvals

The Board reviewed three donation proposals submitted to the district for the upcoming 20212022 school year. All donations are subject to the districts policy on external contributions and must be used for the specified purpose.

1. Donor: Community Builders Foundation
   Amount: $25,000
   Purpose: Purchase of STEM lab equipment for Lincoln Elementary.
   Recommendation: Approved. Motion by Daniels, seconded by Reid, passed unanimously.
2. Donor: GreenFuture Initiative
   Amount: $12,500
   Purpose: Installation of solar panels at the district administration building.
   Recommendation: Approved. Motion by Patel, seconded by Torres, passed unanimously.
3. Donor: Artists for Youth
   Amount: $8,000
   Purpose: Funding for a mural project at Riverside Middle School.
   Recommendation: Approved. Motion by Reid, seconded by Daniels, passed unanimously.

6. Public Comments

Four members of the public addressed the Board:

• Mrs. Gloria Sanchez expressed gratitude for the new STEM equipment donation.
• Mr. Brian Caldwell requested clarification on the timeline for solar panel installation.
• Parents of Riverside Middle School students offered support for the mural project.
• Ms. Heather Liu asked about the districts plan for remote learning postpandemic.

The Board noted each comment and agreed to followup as appropriate.

7. Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45p.m. by motion of President Torres, seconded by VicePresident Daniels. The next regular meeting is scheduled for January122021.
