Why a Dedicated Collection Matters

Living with diabetes involves constant learningabout nutrition, medication, monitoring, and lifestyle adjustments. For individuals who are blind or have low vision, accessing uptodate, reliable information can be a barrier if resources are not offered in accessible formats. The Braille Talking Book Library fills this gap by providing audiobooks, braille transcriptions, and digital talking books that focus specifically on diabetes education, management, and personal stories.

Types of Guides Available

1. Fundamentals of Diabetes

• Understanding Diabetes: A Beginners Guide clear explanations of Type1, Type2, gestational diabetes, and prediabetes.

How the Collection Is Organized

Materials are grouped in three main formats, each searchable through the librarys online catalog:

1. Talking Books (DAISY) digital audio files with navigation cues, compatible with most screenreading devices.
2. Braille Books (BRF/BRL) printable braille files for use with braille embossers or refreshable braille displays.
3. Large Print & HighContrast PDFs for readers with limited vision who prefer visual text.

Each entry includes a brief summary, target audience (e.g., newly diagnosed, caregivers, advanced management), and accessibility notes such as includes tactile diagrams or compatible with VoiceOver.

Getting Access

Access is free for registered patrons of any participating library or for individuals who meet eligibility criteria for the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS). Follow these steps:

1. Visit your local library or the NLS website to apply for a free membership.
2. Obtain a compatible DAISY player, refreshable braille display, or use the free NLS mobile app.
3. Log in to the Braille Talking Book Library portal and search for diabetes or browse the Health & Wellness shelf.
4. Download or stream the desired titles. Downloads can be transferred to a braille embosser for hardcopy versions.

Patrons can also request titles not currently in the collection; the library participates in interlibrary loan programs to acquire new guides quickly.

Beyond providing books, the library hosts regular webinars and listening circles:
