Brave Heart Scholarship 2022

Overview

The Brave Heart Scholarship 2022 was created to empower young individuals who demonstrate courage, resilience, and a commitment to community service. Funded by the nonprofit organization Brave Heart Foundation, the award provides financial assistance to students pursuing higher education in fields that align with the foundations mission of social impact and leadership.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a high school senior or a college freshman enrolled in a accredited U.S. institution.
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Demonstrated involvement in community service, leadership, or advocacy work.
  • Financial need as determined by the FAFSA or equivalent documentation.
  • Commitment to a field of study that promotes societal betterment (e.g., education, public health, environmental science, social work).

Application Process

The 2022 cycle opened on January 15 and closed on March 31. Applicants were required to submit the following materials through the online portal:

  1. Completed application form.
  2. Official transcript(s) from the most recent academic term.
  3. Two letters of recommendation (one academic, one from a community leader).
  4. Personal essay (max 800 words) answering the prompt: Describe a moment when you showed bravery in the face of adversity and how it shaped your future goals.
  5. Proof of financial need (FAFSA summary or tax documentation).

All documents were uploaded as PDF files. The portal automatically confirmed receipt and provided a tracking number for each applicant.

Selection Committee

The committee consisted of five members:

  • Dr. Maya Patel Professor of Sociology, University of Washington.
  • James Ortega Director of Community Programs, Brave Heart Foundation.
  • Rebecca Lin Former recipient of the Brave Heart Scholarship (2020).

Each application was evaluated using a weighted rubric (40% essay, 30% academic achievement, 20% community impact, 10% financial need). Scores were normalized, and the top 30 candidates were invited for a 15minute virtual interview.

Scholarship Benefits

Recipients received the following support for the 20222025 academic years:

  • Annual award of $5,000, renewable for up to three years, contingent on maintaining a 3.0 GPA.
  • Mentorship pairing with a Brave Heart alumnus.
  • Access to exclusive leadership workshops and networking events.
  • Opportunity to present a community project at the annual Brave Heart Summit.

Winners of 2022

After a thorough review, the foundation announced 15 scholars on May 10, 2022. Below are brief profiles of the awardees:

1. Aisha Rahman University of California, Berkeley

Major: Environmental Science. Aisha founded Clean Rivers, a studentled initiative that removed over 2,000 pounds of debris from local waterways.

2. Marcus Lee Boston University

Major: Public Health. Marcus organized a citywide health fair that provided free screenings to 1,200 lowincome residents.

3. Sofia Torres University of Texas at Austin

Major: Education. Sofia volunteers as a tutor for undocumented youth and is developing a bilingual curriculum for early literacy.

Impact Highlights

Since its inception, the Brave Heart Scholarship has awarded over $1.2 million to 120 scholars. In 2022 alone, recipients collectively contributed more than 10,000 volunteer hours and launched five community projects that served over 5,000 people.

One notable achievement was the Youth Voices podcast series created by three 2022 scholars, which reached an audience of 30,000 listeners and sparked policy discussions on youth mental health.
