Cape Town Society for the Blind
Our Low Vision Clinic provides comprehensive care and support for individuals with partial sight, helping them maintain independence and quality of life.
The Cape Town Society for the Blind Low Vision Clinic is dedicated to providing comprehensive low vision services to individuals in the Western Cape and beyond. Established as part of our broader commitment to supporting the blind and partially sighted community, the clinic offers specialized assessment, rehabilitation, and support services.
Low vision is defined as having visual impairment that cannot be corrected completely with glasses, contact lenses, medication, or surgery. At our clinic, we understand the profound impact that vision loss can have on daily life, from reading and writing to mobility and independent living. Our team of experienced optometrists, orientation and mobility specialists, and rehabilitation counselors work together to provide personalized care that maximizes remaining vision and helps clients adapt to vision changes.
What sets our clinic apart is our holistic approach to low vision care. We don't just examine eyes; we examine how vision loss affects every aspect of a person's life and provide practical solutions tailored to individual needs and goals.
The Low Vision Clinic offers a comprehensive range of services designed to address the diverse needs of our clients:
Our thorough low vision evaluations assess remaining vision, examine ocular health, and evaluate visual function for various tasks. These assessments help determine appropriate aids and interventions.
We prescribe and train clients in the use of specialized optical and electronic devices including magnifiers, telescopes, electronic reading machines, and assistive technology.
Our rehabilitation program teaches skills for daily living, including cooking, cleaning, personal care, and medication management, promoting independence despite vision loss.
Specialized instructors teach cane techniques, orientation strategies, and public transportation skills, helping clients navigate their environments safely and confidently.
We provide instruction on using computers, smartphones, and tablets with screen magnification, screen readers, and other accessibility features.
Our counselors help clients and families cope with the emotional and psychological challenges of vision loss, connecting them with support groups and resources.
Since establishing the Low Vision Clinic, we have helped thousands of individuals with low vision regain independence and improve their quality of life. Our programs have demonstrated measurable outcomes:
"Before coming to the Low Vision Clinic, I was losing hope. My vision was deteriorating, and I thought my active life was over. The team didn't just provide me with magnifiers; they gave me back my independence. I can read again, enjoy my hobbies, and even returned to work part-time. The support I received changed everything."
"As a teacher with macular degeneration, I was devastated when I could no longer grade papers or read clearly. The Clinic's assistive technology specialists trained me on programs that magnify text and read content aloud. I've continued teaching for another five years thanks to their support. I cannot express my gratitude enough."
Our success is measured by the testimonials of our clients who have regained confidence, achieved personal goals, and maintained independence despite vision challenges. Many continue to work, pursue education, engage in hobbies, and lead fulfilling lives through the skills and tools provided by our clinic.
The Cape Town Society for the Blind was established in 1929 with a simple yet powerful mission: to support blind and partially sighted individuals in the Cape Peninsula. Over the decades, our organization has evolved and expanded to meet the changing needs of our community.
Recognizing a significant gap in services for individuals with low vision those who are not fully blind but have substantial vision loss that cannot be corrected with standard glasses we established the Low Vision Clinic in 1998. This initiative was driven by the understanding that many people with partial sight were falling through the service cracks, struggling without appropriate support or solutions.
Initially operating from a single room with basic equipment, the clinic has grown over the years. We've expanded our physical space, added staff specialized in various aspects of low vision care, and incorporated cutting-edge technology. Today, our Low Vision Clinic is recognized as a center of excellence, serving not only Cape Town but also referring cases from throughout South Africa and neighboring countries.
The clinic has adapted to technological advancements, integrating electronic magnifiers, smartphone applications, and computer accessibility features into our services. We continue to evolve our programs based on research, client feedback, and emerging best practices in low vision care worldwide.
If you or someone you know could benefit from our low vision services, or if you would like to support our work, we'd love to hear from you.
