Overview
The Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS), popularly known as Career Defence Schools, are a group of five premier institutions administered by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. Established to foster a spirit of discipline, patriotism, and academic excellence, RMS prepares students for a career in the Indian Armed Forces while delivering a robust General Education curriculum aligned with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). This page outlines the syllabus followed from Class6 to Class12, highlighting the academic structure, subject choices, assessment methods, and how the syllabus supports the ultimate goal of grooming competent officers for the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Curricular Framework
RMS follows the CBSE curriculum with a few enhancements to embed military values and physical training. The framework is divided into three stages:
- Primary Stage (Class68): Focus on foundational knowledge, basic sciences, languages, and introductory physical training.
- Secondary Stage (Class910): Core subjects become more analytical; students appear for the CBSE Board Examination at the end of Class10.
- Senior Secondary Stage (Class1112): Students choose streams (Science, Commerce, Humanities) and specialize in subjects that align with defence entrance examinations.
In addition to academic subjects, each student undergoes:
- Physical Fitness Training (PFT) gymnastics, obstacle courses, marching.
- Leadership & Character Building NCC, QUIZ, debate, and community service.
- Preservice Orientation briefing on the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Naval Academy, and Air Force Academy.

Results are presented in a transparent report card showing academic marks, cocurricular grades, and physical fitness scores, enabling students and parents to track overall development.
Career Pathways after RMS
The syllabus is deliberately aligned with the requirements of the three major defence entrance examinations NDA, AFND and Naval Academy Admission Test as well as the Indian Civil Services.
- National Defence Academy (NDA): Strong performance in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) for Army & Air Force, and PCM or PCM with Biology for Naval Wing.
- Indian Military Academy (IMA) & Officer Training Academy (OTA): For candidates who clear NDA, or directly through the Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam.
- Air Force Academy (AFA) & Indian Naval Academy (INA): Specialized examinations requiring high scores in PCM and advanced English.
- Technical Cadet Entry: For engineering graduates, RMS alumni can apply for technical branches (e.g., Army Corps of Engineers).
- Civil Services & Other Competitive Exams: The rigorous academic foundation also prepares students for UPSC, SSC, and banking exams.
Beyond defence, RMS alumni have excelled in engineering, medicine, aviation, and corporate leadership, underscoring the versatility of the curriculum.
