Wordformation is one of the most productive aspects of human language. While the creation of simple stems can be handled by lexical processes, the formation of complex wordscompounds, derivational affixes, reduplication, clipping, backformation and many othersrequires the interaction of two traditionally separate modules of grammar: morphology (the study of word internal structure) and syntax (the study of phrase and clause structure).
