In contrast, Bugis represents the agglutinative nature typical of Austronesian languages. Meaning is built by stringing together discrete morphemes. The root word in Bugis is usually a stable, complete phonological unit. A learner of Arabic must recognize the "skeleton" of the root within a word, whereas a learner of Bugis must master the inventory of available affixes.
Another divergence is found in the way nouns are marked. Arabic utilizes a complex system of case markers (nominative, accusative, genitive) often indicated by short vowels at the end of words or suffixal endings. Bugis does not utilize a case system in the same way; instead, it relies heavily on word order and particle usage to delineate the roles of subjects and objects within a sentence.
