Conversation Analysis

Understanding the structure and organization of talk-in-interaction

What is Conversation Analysis?

Conversation Analysis (CA) is a branch of sociology that studies the detailed, momentbymoment organization of talk as it naturally occurs. Rather than treating language as a formal system of rules, CA focuses on how participants use language to achieve social actionssuch as greeting, requesting, agreeing, or confrontingwithin the constraints of the immediate context.

The discipline treats talk as a form of social practice. By examining recordings of ordinary interaction (telephone calls, facetoface meetings, online chats, etc.) CA uncovers patterns that participants themselves use, often unconsciously, to make communication work smoothly.

Historical Roots

CA emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s from the work of sociologists Harold Garfinkel (founder of ethnomethodology) and his student Harvey Sacks. Their collaborative studies on telephone calls and everyday conversation revealed that seemingly trivial aspects of talkpauses, intonation, overlapscarry systematic meaning.

Key early publications include:

  • Sacks, Schegloff & Jefferson (1974) A simplest systematics for the organization of turntaking
  • Garfinkel (1967) Studies in Ethnomethodology
  • Heritage (1984) Talk in Action (which extended CA into institutional settings)

Methodological Core

Data Collection

CA relies on naturalistic recordings. Researchers obtain consent, then use highquality audio or video to capture every audible and visual cue. Transcriptions follow a specialized system (the Jefferson notation) that marks pauses, overlaps, intonation contours, and nonverbal actions.

Analytic Process

The analysis is iterative:

  1. Close reading of transcripts to identify recurring structures.
  2. Formulation of hypotheses about how participants achieve particular actions.
  3. Testing these hypotheses across multiple excerpts to see whether they hold.
  4. Refinement and, where possible, theoretical generalization.
The aim is not to explain why speakers say what they say, but how they manage to say it in the first place. Harold Garfinkel

TurnTaking

Turntaking is the fundamental unit of organization. Conversation proceeds as a series of speaker turns, each of which is allocated by a set of implicit rules:

  • Turn Construction Units (TCUs) the grammatical and prosodic shape that can form a complete turn.
  • Transition Relevance Places (TRPs) moments where the next speaker may take the floor, often signaled by a pause or falling intonation.
  • First Pair Part (FPP) and Second Pair Part (SPP) in adjacency pairs, the first utterance creates an expectation for a particular type of response.

When a speaker reaches a TRP without being taken up, the floor is said to be projected to them; if another participant begins speaking before the projected speaker, an overlap occurs, which is itself systematically organized.

Repair and Troubleshooting

Even wellordered conversations encounter trouble. Repair mechanisms restore mutual understanding:

  • Selfrepair the original speaker corrects themselves (e.g., I went I mean, Ill go tomorrow).
  • Otherrepair a listener signals misunderstanding (e.g., What do you mean?). The original speaker then supplies clarification.
  • Conditional repair a participant preemptively hedges a statement to avoid trouble (If Im not mistaken).

Repair sequences are often short, because participants work to minimize disruption and return swiftly to the preceding activity.

Sequence Organization

Beyond turnbyturn exchange, CA studies larger sequences of actions. The most common structure is the adjacency pair (e.g., questionanswer, greetingreturn greeting). These pairs can be expanded through:

  • Presequence an introductory action that sets up a subsequent pair (e.g., Can I ask you something? before a request).
  • Insert a third action inserted between the first and second parts (e.g., a clarification request before an answer).
  • Postsequence a followup that closes the interaction (e.g., a thankyou after a request is granted).

Understanding these patterned expansions helps researchers trace how social meaningssuch as politeness, power, or solidarityare negotiated.

Applications & Current Research

Conversation Analysis has migrated far beyond the study of casual talk. Its methods are now applied in:

  • Medical Interaction analyzing doctorpatient talk to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient satisfaction.
  • Legal Settings studying courtroom discourse, police interrogations, and witness statements.
  • Education examining classroom talk, teacher feedback, and peer tutoring.
  • HumanComputer Interaction informing the design of voice assistants and chatbots to make them respond more naturally to turntaking cues.
  • Social Media extending CA to asynchronous textual exchanges, such as forum threads or Twitter conversations.

Recent research highlights the role of multimodal resourcesgaze, gesture, and facial expressionin coordinating turntaking, especially in videomediated communication. The rise of artificial intelligence has also spurred interest in conversationready corpora that can train machines to respect CA principles.
