Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) Academic Curriculum

The Bachelor of Physiotherapy program is a comprehensive undergraduate course designed to train students in the science and art of physical rehabilitation. The curriculum is spread over four years, followed by a compulsory clinical internship, ensuring that graduates possess both the theoretical knowledge and clinical competencies required to practice as independent physical therapists.

First Year B. Physiotherapy

The first year focuses on building a strong foundation in human anatomy and physiology, which are the cornerstones of clinical practice. Students are introduced to the basics of movement and the principles of exercise therapy.

  • Human Anatomy: Detailed study of the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, and systemic anatomy.
  • Human Physiology: Understanding how body systems function, including neuro-physiology, cardiovascular, and respiratory physiology.
  • Biochemistry: Essential concepts related to metabolism and human health.
  • Fundamentals of Kinesiology: Introduction to human movement, planes, axes, and basic biomechanics.
  • Psychology & Sociology: Understanding patient behavior and social health determinants.

Second Year B. Physiotherapy

In the second year, the focus shifts toward pathology, pharmacology, and the application of physical agents in treatment. Students begin to bridge the gap between basic sciences and clinical interventions.

  • Pathology: Study of disease processes, inflammation, and cellular changes.
  • Microbiology: Principles of infection control and hygiene.
  • Pharmacology: Study of drugs commonly used in clinical practice and their implications for physiotherapy.
  • Exercise Therapy: Mechanics of therapeutic exercises, joint mobilization, and patient handling techniques.
  • Electrotherapy (Part I): Introduction to the physical principles of modalities like heat, cold, and basic electrical stimulation.

Third Year B. Physiotherapy

The third year involves intensive study of medical and surgical conditions that require physiotherapy. Clinical exposure increases as students observe and participate in the assessment of diverse patient populations.

  • General Medicine: Overview of medical conditions relevant to physical therapy.
  • General Surgery: Understanding pre-operative and post-operative surgical procedures.
  • Orthopedics and Traumatology: Assessment and management of fractures, sports injuries, and degenerative joint diseases.
  • Neurology: Study of neurological conditions, including stroke, spinal cord injuries, and nerve palsies.
  • Electrotherapy (Part II): Advanced modalities and the integration of therapeutic technologies in treatment plans.

Final Year B. Physiotherapy

The final year represents the culmination of the academic journey. It focuses on specialized rehabilitation, evidence-based practice, and advanced physiotherapy techniques for specialized patient care.

  • Physiotherapy in Musculoskeletal Conditions: Advanced management of complex orthopaedic issues.
  • Physiotherapy in Neuro-rehabilitation: Evidence-based strategies for neurological recovery.
  • Cardio-Pulmonary Physiotherapy: Specialized rehabilitation for patients with cardiac and respiratory impairments.
  • Community-Based Rehabilitation: Strategies for health promotion, disability prevention, and elderly care.
  • Research Methodology & Biostatistics: Training to interpret and conduct clinical research.
  • Professional Practice: Ethical considerations, legal responsibilities, and administration in physiotherapy clinics.

Following the successful completion of the four-year academic program and the final examination, students proceed to a mandatory internship period. During this time, they gain practical experience in various departments such as ICU, orthopedics, neurology, and pediatrics under the supervision of senior clinicians, preparing them for professional independent practice.
