Human evolution began in Africa roughly six to seven million years ago. Our earliest ancestors were not humans as we define them today, but rather bipedal apes. As the climate fluctuated, new species emerged. In Europe and Western Asia, Homo neanderthalensis (Neanderthals) adapted to cold environments. They were muscular, strong, and highly skilled hunters with evidence of complex social behaviors, such as burying their dead. Meanwhile, in Africa, Homo sapiensour own speciesevolved roughly 300,000 years ago.
Eventually, Homo sapiens migrated out of Africa, encountering other hominin groups. Genetic research reveals that our ancestors interbred with Neanderthals and the mysterious Denisovans. By about 40,000 years ago, Homo sapiens were the sole remaining hominin species on the planet, equipped with complex language, symbolic thought, and artistic expression.
The rise of art, cave paintings, and jewelry suggests that early humans had developed the capacity for abstract thought. We began to tell stories, create myths, and organize into larger communities. This cognitive revolution was the final piece of the puzzle that enabled humans to transform the landscape, eventually leading to the agricultural revolution and the rise of civilization.
