Sanskrit, often regarded as the mother of many SouthAsian languages, possesses a rich lexicon that stretches over millennia. Despite its historical importance, contemporary speakers encounter obstacles in acquiring and retaining Sanskrit vocabulary. Traditional rotelearning methods, while effective for shortterm memorisation, frequently fail to produce lasting competence. In response, educators and researchers have experimented with multimediabased strategiesintegrating audio, visual, and interactive elementsto improve vocabulary acquisition. This article reviews the theoretical foundations, empirical findings, and practical implications of using multimedia to teach Sanskrit vocabulary.
Multimedia learning theory posits that people process information through two separate channels: visual/pictorial and auditory/verbal (Mayer, 2009). When instructional material simultaneously engages both channels, learners can create richer mental representations, leading to deeper understanding and better recall. The theory also emphasises the principles of contiguity, coherence, and signallingguidelines that help designers avoid cognitive overload.
