A Guide to EFT Tapping Points

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), often referred to as "tapping," is a therapeutic practice that combines elements of cognitive therapy and acupressure. By tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on a specific stressor or negative emotion, practitioners aim to restore balance to the body's energy system.

The Concept Behind Tapping

EFT is based on the premise that all negative emotions are caused by a disruption in the body's energy system. By stimulating specific points along the energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture, the body can process and release stored emotional distress. Unlike acupuncture, EFT uses fingertip pressure rather than needles, making it a non-invasive self-help tool.

The Standard Tapping Sequence

Most EFT sessions follow a specific sequence of tapping points. It is generally recommended to use two or more fingers to tap gently but firmly on these points while stating a setup phraseusually acknowledging the problem and affirming self-acceptance.

The Primary Tapping Points

  • Karate Chop (KC): Located on the fleshy outer edge of the hand, below the pinky finger. This is the starting point for the setup statement.
  • Eyebrow (EB): Located at the beginning of the eyebrow, right above the bridge of the nose.
  • Side of the Eye (SE): Found on the bone bordering the outside corner of the eye.
  • Under the Eye (UE): On the bone directly under the center of the eye.
  • Under the Nose (UN): The area between the bottom of the nose and the top of the upper lip.
  • Chin Point (CH): In the crease between the lower lip and the chin.
  • Collarbone (CB): Located where the sternum, collarbone, and first rib meet. Tapping here helps address anxiety.
  • Under the Arm (UA): About four inches below the armpit, on the side of the torso.
  • Top of the Head (TH): Located at the crown of the head.

How to Perform a Session

To begin a session, identify the issue you want to addresssuch as stress, sadness, or a specific fear. Rate the intensity of your discomfort on a scale of 0 to 10. Perform the "Setup" by tapping the Karate Chop point while repeating three times: "Even though I have this [problem], I deeply and completely accept myself."

After the setup, proceed through the points listed above in order, tapping each point about 5 to 7 times while repeating a brief reminder phrase, such as "this stress" or "this fear." Once you have completed the sequence, take a deep breath and check your intensity level again. If it is still above zero, you can repeat the process until the emotional charge decreases.

Important Considerations

EFT is widely used as a stress-reduction tool and a way to promote emotional well-being. While it is accessible and easy to learn, it is not a substitute for professional mental health care. If you are struggling with severe trauma or chronic mental health conditions, it is important to consult with a licensed therapist or medical professional before attempting to manage these conditions on your own.
