Our Mission

The Elbow River Watershed Partnership (ERWP) is a collaborative watershed planning and advisory council established in 1998 to protect and enhance the health of the Elbow River watershed in Alberta, Canada. Our mission is to promote sustainable water management practices, preserve ecological integrity, and engage stakeholders in meaningful conservation efforts.

About the Elbow River Watershed

The Elbow River watershed covers approximately 1,239 square kilometers in southwestern Alberta, originating in the front ranges of the Rocky Mountains and flowing eastward to its confluence with the Bow River in Calgary. This watershed provides essential habitat for diverse wildlife populations, supports recreational activities, and serves as a crucial source of drinking water for over half of Calgary's population.

The watershed's upper reaches contain pristine mountain environments, while its middle and lower sections traverse diverse landscapes including foothills, agricultural lands, and urban areas. This diversity creates both unique conservation opportunities and significant management challenges.

Our History

Established in 1998 as a response to growing concerns about water quality and quantity in the region, the ERWP has evolved into a respected voice for watershed management. Originally formed by representatives from various government agencies, municipalities, industries, and environmental organizations, the partnership continues to expand its membership to include concerned citizens and additional stakeholders.
