Electrochemistry is the branch of physical chemistry that studies the relationship between electricity, as a measurable and quantitative phenomenon, and identifiable chemical change. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS)

EIS is a highly sensitive technique that probes the electrical properties of an interface by applying a small-amplitude sinusoidal potential perturbation across a range of frequencies. By analyzing the frequency response, researchers can distinguish between different processes such as charge transfer resistance, solution resistance, and mass transport (diffusion).

Applications in Science and Industry

Electrochemical methods are indispensable in modern science. Their applications include:

  • Environmental Monitoring: Detecting heavy metals and organic pollutants in water sources.
  • Clinical Diagnostics: Monitoring blood glucose, electrolytes, and biomarkers.

Advantages of Electrochemical Methods

Compared to other analytical techniques, electrochemical methods are generally cost-effective, portable, and capable of high sensitivity. Many electrochemical sensors can be miniaturized, enabling point-of-care testing and continuous monitoring in real-time. Furthermore, they are often non-destructive or require very small sample volumes, making them ideal for complex biological and environmental samples.
