Elementary Czech I Course Syllabus

Course Overview

This introductory course is designed for beginners with little or no prior exposure to Czech. Over a 12week period, students develop basic communication skills, acquire essential vocabulary, learn fundamental grammar, and gain confidence in everyday interactions. All material is presented in English, with plenty of audio, visual, and interactive activities to support auditory and kinesthetic learners.

Learning Outcomes

  • Pronounce Czech letters and sounds accurately.
  • Introduce yourself and exchange simple personal information.
  • Ask and answer basic questions about time, dates, and locations.
  • Use common greetings, farewells, and polite expressions.
  • Understand and form simple presenttense statements and negative sentences.
  • Read and write basic Czech words, numbers, and short messages.
  • Recognise and use the Czech alphabet, including diacritics.

Teaching Methodology

The course follows a communicative approach. Each class begins with a brief review, followed by a listening or speaking warmup, the introduction of new language items, controlled practice, and finally a freetalk or roleplay activity. Multimedia resourcesaudio clips, short videos, and interactive online exercisesare used to reinforce pronunciation and listening comprehension. Weekly homework assignments consist of short writing tasks, flashcard drills, and selfassessment quizzes on the course platform.

Assessment Policy

  • Formative assessments (quizzes, inclass participation, homework) account for 40% of the final grade.
  • Summative assessments (midterm oral, final written & oral exam) account for 60%.
  • Students must achieve at least 60% overall to pass the course.
  • Extra credit may be earned through optional cultural projects, such as a short presentation on Czech traditions.

  • Access to the learning management system (LMS) for assignments and resources
