AP English Language and Composition: Summer Assignment
Welcome to AP English Language and Composition. This course focuses on the study of rhetoricthe art of using language effectively. To prepare for the rigor of this course, you are required to complete the following summer assignment.
Course Objectives
The primary goal of this assignment is to sharpen your ability to analyze how writers construct arguments, use evidence, and employ stylistic devices to persuade their audiences. This work will serve as our foundation when we begin the academic year.
Part 1: Required Reading
You are required to read the following non-fiction book:
- Educated by Tara Westover
As you read, annotate your text. Look for the author's primary claims, the types of evidence she uses to support those claims, and the shift in her tone as she navigates her educational journey.
Part 2: Rhetorical Analysis Journal
After completing the reading, maintain a digital or physical journal consisting of four entries. Each entry should be approximately 300 words and focus on a specific passage from the book.
- Selection: Choose a passage that you find particularly compelling or rhetorically complex.
- Analysis: Explain how the author uses language to achieve her purpose. Do not simply summarize the plot; focus on the writers choices.
- Connection: Discuss how this passage connects to the broader themes of the book.
Part 3: Current Events Portfolio
Choose two high-quality editorial or opinion pieces from reputable news sources (e.g., The New York Times, The Atlantic, or The Wall Street Journal). For each article, provide a brief summary and identify the author's argument and their intended audience.
Submission Guidelines
All work must be typed, double-spaced, and follow MLA formatting guidelines. You will submit your assignments through the class portal on the first day of school.
Deadline: The first day of the fall semester.

- Start early. Do not leave the reading and writing until the final week of summer.
- Active reading is essential. Keep a pen in hand and engage with the margins of your book.
- Be specific in your writing. Avoid vague generalizations; focus on how the authors specific word choices influence the reader.
