English A Language and Literature HL Essay Assessment Criteria

The International Baccalaureate (IB) English A: Language and Literature (HL) essay is a 1,200word analytical response to a text or pair of texts. It is assessed using a set of clear criteria that reward insight, structure, language control and textual engagement. Understanding the assessment criteria helps students plan, write, and selfevaluate their essays before submitting them.

Overview of the Scoring Grid

The essay is marked out of 34 points, divided into four criteria (AD). Each criterion carries a maximum of 8 points, except the Language criterion (C), which has a maximum of 10 points. The points are then converted to a grade from 1 to 7.

• Effective comparative discussion when a pair of texts is used.
• Balanced evaluation acknowledging strengths and limitations of the text(s) in relation to the prompt.

• Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence that signals the analytical point.
• Link each piece of evidence back to the central thesis.
• Use transitional phrases to maintain coherence (e.g., Consequently, In contrast, This illustrates).
• Offer original insight; avoid generic statements such as the author uses symbolism.

Criterion D Formal Presentation (08)

What examiners look for

• Correct layout: title page, heading information, word count, and pagination.
• Consistent citation style (MLA, APA, Chicago) as agreed with the teacher.
• Accurate bibliography containing all sources referenced.
• Neat, legible presentation no stray markings or excessive spacing.

How to achieve higher marks

• Follow the IB Essay Template or your teachers specific guidelines.
• Check each intext citation matches the bibliography entry.
• Include a word count on the title page; exceed the limit only with prior teacher approval.
