Indian Sign Language (ISL) is a rich, complex, and distinct visual-gestural language. The development of Machine Translation (MT) systems that convert English text to ISL is a critical step toward digital inclusion.
English and ISL belong to entirely different linguistic families. English is a spoken language following Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) structures, while ISL is a visual language that relies on spatial grammar, non-manual markers (like facial expressions), and a different syntactic structure often described as Subject-Object-Verb (SOV). Simply translating word-for-word is insufficient; effective translation requires understanding the cultural and grammatical nuances of ISL.
