Environmental Disasters and Their Gendered Impacts
Environmental disasterssuch as floods, hurricanes, droughts, wildfires, and chemical spillsdo not affect all people equally. Gender is a key factor that shapes vulnerability, exposure, and capacity to respond. Women, men, girls, and boys experience distinct social, economic, and health outcomes during and after a disaster.
These differences arise from longstanding social norms, unequal access to resources, and the division of labour in households and communities. Ignoring gendered impacts leads to ineffective relief, slower recovery, and the reinforcement of inequities.
Women often live in more precarious housing, especially in lowincome coastal or floodprone areas, because men tend to control land ownership. In many rural societies, women are responsible for gathering water and firewood, putting them at higher risk when those resources become scarce or contaminated.
During a disaster, womens reproductive health needs can be overlooked. Lack of access to clean water and sanitation increases the risk of urinary and reproductive tract infections. Pregnant women are especially vulnerable to stress, malnutrition, and exposure to toxic chemicals.
Women typically hold informal or seasonal jobs in agriculture, fisheries, and tourismsectors that are among the first to suffer after a disaster. Loss of income forces many women to take on additional caregiving duties or resort to unsafe coping strategies such as early marriage or risky labor.
Women are frequently excluded from emergency planning and postdisaster reconstruction committees. This exclusion means that their specific needslike safe sanitation facilities or childcare servicesare not addressed in response plans.
Genderbased violence (GBV) rises sharply after disasters. Overcrowded shelters, loss of community protection, and breakdown of legal services create environments where women and girls are at increased risk of sexual assault and exploitation.
In the United States, womenespecially lowincome African American womenfaced longer displacement periods, higher rates of unemployment, and greater psychological distress than men. Women also reported higher incidences of intimate partner violence during the recovery phase.
Women in rural Bangladesh were the primary providers of water for their families. Flooding contaminated their source water, leading to a spike in diarrheal diseases among women and children. Reconstruction programs initially prioritized repairing roads and markets, neglecting the repair of community latrines that women needed most.
Female firefighters and volunteers reported higher rates of burnout because they were simultaneously managing home responsibilities. Additionally, women living in affected rural towns experienced increased mentalhealth challenges due to loss of livestock, which is often tied to womens roles in family food production.
Women who depended on fishing and farming lost their livelihoods when oil contamination devastated the ecosystem. Many turned to informal trading of salvaged materials, exposing them to unsafe working conditions and reducing their bargaining power in the local market.
