About the Department
The George Washington University (GW) Department of Medicine stands at the forefront of medical education, research, and clinical excellence. Established in 1824 as part of GW's School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Department of Medicine has evolved into one of the nation's premier academic medical departments. Our mission is to improve health and healthcare through excellence inpatient care, education, and research, with a particular focus on serving our diverse community in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and beyond.

Education & Training Programs
The Department of Medicine offers comprehensive educational opportunities for medical students, residents, fellows, and continuing education for practicing physicians. Our programs emphasize clinical excellence, evidence-based practice, and humanitarian values.
Internal Medicine Residency Program
Our three-year Internal Medicine Residency Program provides rigorous training that prepares physicians for careers in clinical practice, academic medicine, subspecialty fellowship training, or healthcare leadership. With rotations across GW Hospital, Children's National Medical Center, and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, residents gain diverse clinical experiences in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Categorical Track
Comprehensive training in all aspects of internal medicine with opportunities for both primary care and subspecialty focus.
Preliminary Track
One-year program designed for physicians planning to enter subspecialty training in fields requiring internal medicine foundation.
Primary Care Track
Enhanced outpatient and community-based experiences for residents pursuing careers in primary care medicine.
Medicine-Pediatrics
Combined four-year residency preparing physicians to care for patients of all ages across internal medicine and pediatrics.
