This structured framework serves as a roadmap for prioritizing climate actions to ensure that efforts are both effective and credible. By following this hierarchy, entities move from fundamental systemic changes to technical solutions, ensuring that reliance on carbon offsets remains a last resort.
The hierarchy is a prioritized list of strategies used to reduce an organization's carbon footprint. It is built on the principle of "avoidance first," emphasizing that the most effective way to reduce emissions is to prevent them from occurring in the first place, rather than attempting to clean them up after the fact.
This is the most critical stage. It involves fundamental changes to business models or processes that negate the need for carbon-intensive activities. Examples include redesigning products to require fewer components, shifting to remote work to eliminate employee commutes, or choosing suppliers who operate with zero-carbon logistics. By avoiding the activity altogether, the emissions associated with it are permanently removed from the ledger.
