GMAT Preparation Guide

Master the Graduate Management Admission Test with proven strategies and expert tips

GMAT Overview

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a standardized assessment designed to predict how well you might perform in graduate-level management programs. Administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the GMAT has been used by business schools worldwide for over 60 years as part of their admissions process.

Why is the GMAT Important?

For prospective MBA and business school students, the GMAT serves multiple purposes:

  • It provides schools with a standardized measure to compare applicants from diverse academic backgrounds
  • A strong GMAT score can strengthen an application, particularly if your undergraduate GPA is below average
  • Many scholarship opportunities use GMAT scores as a key criterion
  • Some employers, particularly in consulting and finance, request GMAT scores during recruitment

Business schools worldwide have reported that GMAT scores are consistently reliable indicators of academic success in their programs. On average, GMAT scores predict over 65% of the variance in academic performance in business school.

GMAT Test Structure

The computer-adaptive GMAT consists of four sections designed to measure different skills considered important for graduate business education. Each section has its own time limit and specific question types.

Section Number of Questions Time Allowed Score Range
Analytical Writing Assessment 1 essay prompt 30 minutes 0-6
Integrated Reasoning 12 questions 30 minutes 1-8
Quantitative Reasoning 31 questions 62 minutes 6-51
Verbal Reasoning 36 questions 65 minutes 6-51

The total testing time is 3 hours and 7 minutes, excluding breaks. The test begins with the Analytical Writing Assessment, followed by the Integrated Reasoning section, Quantitative Reasoning, and concludes with Verbal Reasoning. You can choose the order of these sections before beginning the test. Two optional 8-minute breaks are included between sections.

Computer-Adaptive Nature of the Test

The Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning sections are computer-adaptive, meaning the test adjusts its difficulty based on your performance. If you answer a question correctly, the next question will be more difficult; if you answer incorrectly, the next question will be easier. This format allows the test to more accurately determine your ability level compared to a fixed-form exam.

This adaptive nature creates important strategic implications. Early questions in these sections have a greater impact on your score and your ability to reach difficult questions where you can demonstrate higher-level skills.

GMAT Preparation Strategies

Effective GMAT preparation requires a structured approach tailored to your strengths and weaknesses. Successful test-takers typically spend 100-150 hours studying over 3-6 months.

Establish a Baseline

Begin your preparation with a full-length, official practice test under timed conditions. This diagnostic will:

  • Provide an accurate starting score
  • Identify your strengths and weaknesses across all sections
  • Familiarize you with the test's interface and format
  • Help establish a realistic target score based on your school's requirements

Create a Study Schedule

Develop a realistic study plan that fits your lifestyle and commitments while ensuring comprehensive coverage of test content. An effective schedule should include:

  1. Regular, consistent study sessions (daily or every other day)
  2. Time for learning/reviewing concepts
  3. Time for practice problems
  4. Weekly practice tests (increasing in frequency as test day approaches)
  5. Dedicated time for reviewing practice test performance

Week-by-Week Sample Study Schedule

Weeks 1-2: Complete diagnostic test, identify weak areas, begin comprehensive content review

Weeks 3-6: Focus on improving weakest sections, begin building endurance with timed practice

Weeks 7-10: Integrated practice with all sections, work on timing strategies, take weekly practice tests

Weeks 11-12: Final preparation focusing on test-day strategies, light review of all content, maintain confidence

Focus on Weaknesses

While maintaining your strengths, dedicate the majority of your study time to improving your weakest areas. These sections offer the greatest potential for score improvement. Use your diagnostic test and subsequent practice tests to track your progress in these areas.

Study Resources and Materials

Choosing the right study materials significantly impacts your preparation effectiveness. The GMAT marketplace offers numerous options, ranging from official resources to third-party test prep materials.

Test-Taking Strategies

Effective GMAT preparation involves not only mastering content but also developing strategies to optimize your performance on test day.

Time Management Techniques

The GMAT strictly enforces time limits, making pacing essential:

  • Determine target times: Quantitative questions average 2 minutes each; Verbal questions average about 1 minute and 45 seconds each
  • Monitor progress: Check the clock after completing a certain number of questions to ensure you're on pace
  • Establish cut-off points: Decide in advance how many minutes to allocate per question before moving on
  • Practice with timing: Do at least half your practice problems under time constraints

Section-Specific Strategies

Each GMAT section requires specialized approaches:

Analytical Writing Assessment

  • Structure your time: 5 minutes to plan and outline, 20 minutes to write, 5 minutes to review and edit
  • Focus on organization and critical analysis rather than creative writing
  • Develop a clear template for analyzing arguments

Integrated Reasoning

  • Preview all parts of a question before beginning calculations
  • Familiarize yourself with the different question types and their unique formats
  • Use any provided on-screen calculator only when necessary, as it can slow you down

Quantitative Reasoning

  • For Data Sufficiency, evaluate each statement independently before considering them together
  • Learn to recognize common trap answers in multiple-choice questions
  • Practice estimation techniques to quickly eliminate improbable answer choices

Verbal Reasoning

  • For Reading Comprehension, focus on understanding the passage's structure and main points
  • In Critical Reasoning questions, identify the conclusion and supporting evidence before reading the answer choices
  • For Sentence Correction, focus on grammatical rules rather than "sounding right"

Test Day Guidelines

To ensure peak performance on exam day:

  • Visit the test center beforehand to familiarize yourself with the location
  • Prepare all required identification materials the night before
  • Get adequate sleep the night before the test
  • Eat a light, nutritious meal before the exam
  • Arrive at the test center 30 minutes early
  • Use breaks to stretch, hydrate, and clear your mind
  • Maintain confidence in your preparation and abilities

Mental Preparation

The psychological aspects of test-taking significantly influence performance:

  • Practice relaxation techniques to manage test anxiety
  • Develop positive self-talk to maintain confidence
  • Prepare a strategy for handling difficult questions without becoming flustered
  • Remember that one question won't determine your overall score
  • Focus on the question at hand rather than worrying about previous or future questions

Understanding Your Score

The most important GMAT score is the Total Score (200-800), which combines your Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning performance. This score is reported in 10-point increments and reflects your percentile ranking among all test-takers. For competitive MBA programs, a Total Score of 700 or above (top 10%) is often preferred, though admissions decisions consider many factors beyond the GMAT.
