Gujarati is an Indo-Aryan language native to the Indian state of Gujarat and spoken predominantly by the Gujarati people. It is part of the greater Indo-European language family. The Gujarati script ( Gujrt Lipi) is an abugida, like almost all Brahmic scripts, and is used to write the Gujarati and Kutchi languages.
The script evolved from the Devanagari script during the 16th century and has gone through several modifications. Unlike Devanagari, the Gujarati script does not have the horizontal line at the top of letters. This makes it somewhat simpler to write and gives it a more circular appearance.
The Gujarati alphabet consists of 36 consonants and 12 vowel letters (including 7 dependent vowel forms that modify consonants). In total, the alphabet is made of 45 independent letters. The direction of writing is from left to right, like English and most modern writing systems.
Did you know? Gujarati was the mother tongue of both Mahatma Gandhi and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founding fathers of India and Pakistan respectively. It is also the language of some of India's most prominent business families, including the Ambanis and the Tatas.
In Gujarati, vowels are called "svara" (swar). There are 13 vowel sounds in total - while there are 10 distinct vowel letters, including 3 diphthongs. Vowels can stand alone as independent letters or can be attached to consonants in the form of vowel signs (matras).

Vowel Signs (Matras): When vowels appear after consonants, they are written as distinctive marks or signs known as matras. The inherent vowel 'a' () is pronounced with every consonant when no other vowel sign is attached.
Important Note: The Gujarati script distinguishes between short and long vowels, which can change the meaning of words. For example, '' (kalam) meaning 'pen' and '' (kum) meaning 'black' differ only in vowel length.
Gujarati consonants are called "vyanjana" (vyanjan). They are organized into groups based on their place and manner of articulation. There are 36 consonants in the Gujarati alphabet.
