About Our Textbook Program
Harold Washington College is committed to providing accessible and affordable educational materials for all students. Our comprehensive textbook program ensures that students have access to the resources they need to succeed in their academic journey.
The College works closely with faculty and publishers to carefully select textbooks that align with course objectives while keeping costs manageable. Each academic department maintains a list of required and recommended resources for courses offered during the semester.
Students can find all required textbooks through our campus bookstore or various online platforms. We also offer several textbook affordability initiatives, including rental programs, digital options, and open educational resources (OER) for select courses.

Textbook Resources & Affordability Initiatives
Harold Washington College recognizes that textbook costs can be a significant burden for students. To address this challenge, we offer several resources and initiatives:
Bookstore Services
The campus bookstore provides both new and used textbook options, along with rental programs for select titles. Students can compare prices and choose the option that best fits their budget. The bookstore also offers buyback programs at the end of each semester.
Digital Options
Many courses offer digital textbook alternatives, often at a reduced cost compared to physical copies. These e-textbooks can be accessed through multiple devices and include interactive features to enhance learning.
Open Educational Resources (OER)
Harold Washington College is actively expanding the use of OERfreely available teaching and learning materials that are in the public domain or have been released under an open license. Several courses now use OER instead of traditional textbooks, eliminating textbook costs entirely for those classes.
Textbook Reserve Program
The library's reserve collection includes copies of required textbooks that can be checked out for short periods, allowing students to complete readings without purchasing the book. While not a substitute for owning a textbook, this service provides temporary access for financial support.
Financial Aid for Textbooks
Eligible students may use financial aid to purchase textbooks. The college's financial aid office can provide information about using federal and state aid, scholarships, or emergency funding for textbook purchases.
