How the Training Works

HRV Biofeedback training is relatively straightforward and can be practiced with the guidance of a professional or through home-based devices and applications. The process generally involves three steps:

  1. Measurement: Using a sensor (often attached to an earlobe or finger), your current heart rate and HRV are tracked.
  2. Guided Breathing: You practice a specific breathing pattern, usually aiming for a "resonant frequency"the breathing rate that creates the largest oscillations in your heart rate. For most adults, this is between 4.5 and 7 breaths per minute.
  3. Real-time Feedback: You watch a display screen that shows your heart rhythm. As you slow your breath and focus on positive or neutral states, you can see your HRV increase, reinforcing the mind-body connection.

However, with consistent practice, you "internalize" the state of coherence. Eventually, you may be able to access a calm, regulated nervous system state during stressful meetings or difficult situations without the need for external sensors.

Consistency is key. Just 10 to 20 minutes of daily practice can lead to lasting changes in how your nervous system manages the demands of daily life. By viewing your heart rate data not as a static number, but as a dynamic reflection of your internal state, you can transform your relationship with stress and reclaim your capacity for calm.
