In Hindi, roots of the form CLwhere C represents an obstruent and L represents a liquid (/r/ or /l/)often demonstrate instability when moving from formal standard registers to colloquial or regional dialects. The primary phonological tension arises from the syllable structure constraints of the target dialect. While Standard Hindi might maintain a specific cluster, regional varieties frequently employ epenthesis or metathesis to simplify the articulation.
The most common transfer rule is the insertion of a schwa [] between the consonant and the liquid. This effectively breaks the complex onset, transforming a monosyllabic root into a disyllabic sequence.
