In 1814, he published "Treatise on Poisons," which documented how to detect poisons and their effects on the human body. Simultaneously, the study of fingerprints began to emerge. In ancient Babylon, fingerprints were used on clay tablets for business transactions, but their application to criminology came later. In 1823, Czech physiologist Jan Evangelista Purkinje published a thesis discussing nine fingerprint patterns. However, it wasn't until Sir William James Herschel, a British official in India, began using fingerprints on contracts in the 1850s that their utility for identity verification was realized.

Another major breakthrough occurred in 1835 when Henry Goddard, one of Scotland Yards original Bow Street Runners, used bullet comparison to catch a murderer. He noticed a flaw in the bullet that matched a mold owned by a suspect, marking one of the earliest uses of forensic ballistics.

The Golden Age: Systemization and Anthropometry

The late 19th century is often called the "Golden Age" of forensics due to the emergence of systematic methods for identifying criminals. In 1879, Alphonse Bertillon, a French criminologist, developed "anthropometry," a system of measuring specific body parts to identify individuals. Known as "Bertillonage," this method became the primary system for criminal identification for nearly three decades before being replaced by fingerprinting.

While Bertillon was measuring skeletons, Sir Francis Galton, a cousin of Charles Darwin, was studying the uniqueness of fingerprints. In 1892, he published "Fingerprints," establishing a statistical model for fingerprint analysis and classifying them into arches, loops, and whorls. His work proved that fingerprints were unique and did not change over a lifetime, making them a definitive method of identification.

In Argentina in 1892, Ivan Vucetich made history by becoming the first person to use fingerprints to solve a crime. The case involved a mother who murdered her two sons; her bloody fingerprint at the scene matched a record on file, leading to a conviction. This event marked the practical transition from anthropometry to fingerprinting as the gold standard of biometric identification.

The 20th Century: The Crime Lab and DNA

The 20th century saw the professionalization of forensic science through the establishment of crime laboratories. In 1910, Edmond Locard, a French criminologist and disciple of Alphonse Bertillon, founded the first police crime laboratory in Lyon, France. He formulated "Locard's Exchange Principle," which posits that the perpetrator of a crime will bring something to the crime scene and leave with something from it. This principle underpins all trace evidence analysis today.

In the United States, the first crime lab opened in 1923 in Los Angeles, followed by the famous FBI laboratory in 1932. During this time, forensic capabilities expanded to include serology, the study of blood and bodily fluids. Scientists could eventually determine the blood type of a stain, though they could not distinguish between individual donors.

A watershed moment occurred in 1984 when British geneticist Sir Alec Jeffreys developed DNA profiling. While working at the University of Leicester, he discovered that sections of DNA showed huge variations between different individuals. This technique, later known as genetic fingerprinting, was first used in a criminal case in 1986 to exonerate an innocent man and convict the real killer in the "Colin Pitchfork" case. DNA profiling revolutionized forensic science, providing a degree of certainty that previously seemed impossible. It has since solved cold cases spanning decades, freed death row inmates, and identified unidentified victims.

The Digital Age and Future Horizons

Entering the 21st century, forensic science has expanded beyond the physical biology of humans to include the digital footprint they leave behind. Digital forensics involves the recovery and investigation of material found in digital devices, often related to computer crime or cyber warfare. As society becomes more interconnected, the demand for analyzing data logs, emails, and smartphone metadata has skyrocketed.

Today, forensic science is a multidisciplinary field using chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, and psychology. New frontiers such as forensic genealogyusing public DNA databases to identify suspects via distant relativeshave become powerful tools, though they raise ethical questions regarding privacy. Furthermore, "touch DNA" technology allows investigators to generate profiles from mere skin cells left on an object, reducing the amount of biological material needed for analysis.
