IELTS Enquiry on Results (EOR)

If you are dissatisfied with your IELTS test results, you have the option to apply for an Enquiry on Results (EOR). This process allows you to request a re-mark of your test by a senior examiner who was not involved in the original assessment of your paper.

When Should You Request an EOR?

Deciding to request a re-mark is a significant step. Candidates typically consider this option if they believe their performance in a specific sectionListening, Reading, Writing, or Speakingwas significantly better than the score they received. Because the test is highly regulated, standard re-marking is a rigorous process involving objective criteria.

The Application Process

To initiate an Enquiry on Results, you must adhere to the following requirements:

  • Timeframe: Your application must be submitted within six weeks of the date printed on your Test Report Form (TRF).
  • Scope: You may choose to have one or all components of your test re-marked. The fee is generally the same regardless of whether you choose one component or all four.
  • Payment: An administrative fee is required at the time of application. This fee is typically refunded in full if your score increases for any component of the test.
Important Note: During the EOR period, your original Test Report Form (TRF) is suspended. You cannot use it for institutional applications or immigration purposes until the re-marking process is complete.

What Happens During the Re-mark?

Once your application and payment are received, your test materials are sent to the central IELTS processing office. A senior examiner, who is blinded to your original score and the name of the original examiner, re-evaluates your work. This ensures that the process remains impartial and fair.

Possible Outcomes

There are three potential outcomes once the process is finalized:

  1. Score Increase: If your score improves, you will be issued a new Test Report Form, and your administrative fee will be refunded.
  2. Score Stays the Same: If the senior examiner determines that your original grade was accurate, your score remains unchanged. The administrative fee is not refunded in this instance.
  3. Score Decrease: It is exceptionally rare for a score to be lowered, as the purpose of the EOR is to ensure accuracy rather than penalize the candidate.

Processing Times

The time taken to receive your results can vary. Generally, you can expect to hear back within 2 to 21 days, depending on the test center and the number of components you requested to be re-marked. You will be notified via email or through your test center portal as soon as the outcome is available.

Before You Apply

Before proceeding with an EOR, carefully consider the costs and the likelihood of a score change. For Reading and Listening components, which are objectively marked, changes are statistically rare. Writing and Speaking sections are subject to examiner judgment, which is why most candidates focus their EOR requests on these specific areas.
