Mastering IELTS Writing Task1

What is IELTS Writing Task1?

In the Academic version of the IELTS exam, Task1 asks you to describe visual information a graph, table, chart, diagram or map in about 150 words. You have 20 minutes to produce a clear, factual report that summarises the main trends, compares data and highlights significant points.

For the General Training version, Task1 is a letter-writing task (formal, semiformal or informal). This guide focuses on the Academic version, which many testtakers find more challenging.

Common Question Types

  • Line graph shows change over time.
  • Bar chart compares quantities across categories.
  • Pie chart displays parts of a whole.
  • Table presents raw numbers.
  • Mixed chart combines two or more of the above.
  • Process diagram explains how something works.
  • Map shows changes in a location.

Although the visual differs, the core skills remain the same: identify key features, organise them logically and use a range of grammatical structures.

Recommended Structure (150180 words)

  1. Introduction (12 sentences) paraphrase the task prompt. Use synonyms and change the grammatical structure.
  2. Overview (23 sentences) give a highlevel summary of the main trend(s) or the most striking differences. No data is required here, just a general picture.
  3. Body Paragraph1 (45 sentences) describe the most important details: highest/lowest values, biggest increase/decrease, etc. Use data to support each point.
  4. Body Paragraph2 (45 sentences) cover the remaining significant features, compare and contrast where relevant, and note any anomalies.

This plan ensures you meet the wordcount requirement, avoid repetition and keep the report coherent.

Language and Grammar Tips

Paraphrasing the Task

Original: The chart below shows the amount of coffee sold in five European countries in 2022.

Paraphrase: The bar chart illustrates coffee sales across five European nations during 2022.

Linking Devices

  • To show increase: rose sharply, climbed dramatically, surged, witnessed a rapid growth
  • To show decrease: fell sharply, dropped, declined markedly, experienced a downturn
  • To compare: similarly, in contrast, whereas, while, compared with
  • To summarise: overall, in summary, to sum up, in brief

Complex Sentences

Use relative clauses and participial phrases to vary sentence structures:

The United Kingdom, which recorded the highest sales, accounted for 25% of the total market.

Sales in Spain fell by 12% after reaching a peak of 1.5million units in March.

Vocabulary for Numbers

Instead of repeating %, alternate with percent, a proportion of, a share of, onethird, twofifths, etc.

Common Errors to Avoid

  • Writing a full essay Task1 is a report, not an argument.
  • Including personal opinions Stick to the data; avoid speculation.
  • Omitting the overview The examiner looks for a clear summary of the main trend.
  • Repeating the same sentence pattern Use a range of structures to show grammatical flexibility.
  • Wrong units or numbers Doublecheck figures; a single mistake can affect coherence.
  • Going offtopic Only describe what is shown; do not add information not presented.

Practice Question & Sample Answer

Task: The line graph below illustrates the number of visitors to three museums in London between 2010 and 2020.

Sample Answer (165 words)

Introduction: The line graph compares annual visitor numbers at the British Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Tate Modern from 2010 to 2020.

Overview: Overall, the British Museum experienced the greatest growth, becoming the most popular venue by 2018, while the Tate Modern showed a modest but steady increase. The Natural History Museums figures remained relatively stable.

Body1: In 2010, the British Museum attracted around 3.5million visitors, the lowest of the three. By 2015, its numbers had risen sharply to 5million and continued climbing to 6.2million in 2020. The Tate Modern started at 2million in 2010 and grew gradually to 3.1million by the end of the period.

Body2: The Natural History Museum recorded 4million visitors in 2010 and hovered between 3.8 and 4.2million throughout the decade, showing only minor fluctuations. Notably, the gap between the British Museum and the Natural History Museum widened after 2013, when the formers visitor count surged.

How to use this: Study the structure, note the linking devices, and then try rewriting the answer using your own vocabulary. Check that you stay within the 150word limit and that every figure is accurate.
