Indian Statistical Service (ISS) Exam 2021

1. Overview

The Indian Statistical Service (ISS) is a coveted GroupA cadre of the Central Government, created to staff the statistical machinery of the nation. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the ISS examination every year to recruit statisticians for positions such as Assistant Director, Statistical Officer and other senior roles in ministries like Finance, Agriculture, and Commerce.

2021 marked an important year as the exam was reinstated after a brief hiatus caused by the COVID19 pandemic. The selection process adhered to the usual threestage format: a preliminary objective test, a main written examination, and a personality interview.

2. Eligibility Criteria

• Educational Qualification: A bachelors degree with a minimum of 55% marks (or equivalent CGPA) in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, or any related field from a recognized university.
• Age Limit: Candidates must be between 21 and 30 years of age as on August1 of the exam year. Age relaxations are available for SC/ST, OBC, and persons with disabilities as per government rules.
• Nationality: Indian citizens only. Candidates of Indian origin residing abroad must apply through the appropriate Indian mission.
