Overview
The Indonesian Seas Large Marine Ecosystem (LME) stretches from the Andaman Sea in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east, covering roughly 2.4 million square kilometres of water and a coastline that snakes around 54,000 kilometres of islands. This expanse includes the worlds most complex marine geography: hundreds of islands, countless reefs, deepsea trenches, mangrove forests, and seagrass meadows. Because of its positioning at the confluence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, the Indonesian Seas LME is a conduit for some of the planets most important oceanic currents, notably the Indonesian Throughflow, which transports up to 15Sv (Sverdrups) of water from the Pacific into the Indian Ocean each year.
The LMEs physical characteristicsstrong tidal regimes, high rainfall, and a wide range of depths from shallow coastal lagoons to the 7,000metredeep Java Trenchcreate a mosaic of habitats that support an extraordinary diversity of life. It is estimated that the region harbours more than 3,000 fish species, over 600 coral species, and a staggering 1,200 species of marine mammals and turtles combined.
Biology & Biodiversity
Coral Reefs
The Coral Triangle, a 3millionkm area that includes much of the Indonesian archipelago, is recognised as the global centre of marine biodiversity. The reefs here provide critical breeding and feeding grounds for commercially important fish, apex predators such as reef sharks, and iconic species like the mantis shrimp and the leafscaled sea cucumber.
Pelagic Species
Because the Indonesian Throughflow links two major ocean basins, the LME is a migratory corridor for tuna, marlin, and billfish. Seasonal movements of yellowfin and albacore tuna are tightly linked to monsoondriven productivity pulses that generate plankton blooms in the western Pacific and eastern Indian Ocean.
Marine Mammals & Turtles
- Irrawaddy dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris) endemic to coastal waters and estuaries.
- Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) use the regions deep waters for feeding.
- Green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and leatherbacks (Dermochelys coriacea) rely on pristine nesting beaches across the archipelago.
Mangroves & Seagrasses
More than 12,000km of mangrove forests fringe the coastlines, while seagrass beds blanket shallow bays. Together they act as nurseries for juvenile fish, trap sediment, and store carbon at rates exceeding many terrestrial forests.
Fact: The Indonesian Seas LME is estimated to sequester 2.5Gt of CO annually, making it a vital natural climatemitigation asset.
Key Threats
Despite its richness, the LME faces a suite of interlinked pressures that jeopardise both ecosystems and the millions of people who depend on them.
Overfishing & IUU Activities
Industrial, artisanal, and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing remove an estimated 1.2million tonnes of fish each year, exceeding sustainable yields for many stocks. Bycatch of sharks, turtles, and cetaceans further erodes biodiversity.
Habitat Degradation
- Coastal development and landuse change lead to mangrove loss (15% lost in the past three decades).
- Destructive fishing practices such as blast and cyanide fishing damage coral structures.
- Pollution from plastic waste, agricultural runoff, and oil spills degrades water quality.
Climate Change
Rising sea temperatures have already caused mass coral bleaching events (2010, 2016, 2020). Ocean acidification threatens calcifying organisms, while sealevel rise endangers lowlying coastal habitats and human settlements.
Invasive Species
Nonnative species like the IndoPacific lionfish have established footholds on some reefs, outcompeting native predators and altering food webs.
