Interdisciplinary Course in Zoology

Bridging biology, ecology, technology and society

Course Overview

The Interdisciplinary Course in Zoology is designed for students who want to explore animal life from multiple perspectives. It combines classical zoological studiesanatomy, physiology, behaviorwith modern approaches such as bioinformatics, conservation policy, and ethical considerations. The curriculum encourages critical thinking, handson research, and collaborative problem solving, preparing graduates for the complex challenges of todays biological world.

Why Study an Interdisciplinary Zoology Program?

  • Holistic Understanding: Gain insight into how genetics, environment, and human activity interact to shape animal populations.
  • CuttingEdge Skills: Learn dataanalysis tools (R, Python), GIS mapping, and molecular techniques alongside fieldwork.
  • RealWorld Impact: Contribute to wildlife conservation, sustainable agriculture, and public health initiatives.
  • Career Flexibility: Opens pathways in academia, NGOs, government agencies, biotech, and media.

Course Structure

The program spans four semesters (two academic years) and is divided into core modules, electives, a research project, and a professional development component.

Core Modules (required)

  • Principles of Animal Biology
  • Evolutionary Theory and Phylogenetics
  • Animal Physiology and Adaptation
  • Ecology and Ecosystem Services
  • Research Methods and Statistics for Life Sciences

Interdisciplinary Electives (choose 3)

  • Conservation Genetics and Genomics
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Wildlife
  • Animal Behavior and Neuroethology
  • Bioinformatics for NonModel Organisms
  • Environmental Law and Policy
  • Science Communication and Outreach

Research Project (Year 2, Semester 4)

Students work in small groups under faculty supervision to address a realworld problem. Examples include:

  • Assessing the impact of urbanization on pollinator networks
  • Using eDNA to monitor invasive fish species
  • Modeling climatedriven range shifts in amphibians

A final report and oral defense are required.

Professional Development

Workshops on grant writing, ethics in animal research, career planning, and entrepreneurship are integrated throughout the program.

Career Opportunities

Graduates leave the program equipped to enter a variety of sectors:

  • Wildlife Conservation: Field biologist, conservation manager, protectedarea planner.
  • Research & Academia: Laboratory technician, PhD candidate, lecturer.
  • Public Health: Disease ecologist, zoonoticrisk analyst.
  • Biotechnology: Geneticist, bioinformatics analyst, product development.
  • Policy & Advocacy: Environmental consultant, NGO coordinator, legislative aide.
  • Science Communication: Writer, documentary producer, museum educator.

Our alumni network spans more than 30 countries, providing mentorship and international collaboration opportunities.

How to Apply

Applications are accepted for the September and January intakes. Follow these steps:

  1. Complete the online application form.
  2. Submit transcripts (minimum grade B in biologyrelated subjects).
  3. Provide a 500word statement of purpose highlighting interdisciplinary interests.
  4. Two academic references (one from a science teacher or supervisor).
  5. Optional: Include a short video (max 2 minutes) describing a personal experience with animals or nature.

International students must provide English proficiency proof (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent) and a studypermit plan.
