International Seating Symposium (ISS)

Uniting designers, researchers, manufacturers, and policymakers for a better seated future

About the Symposium

The International Seating Symposium (ISS) is a biennial gathering that explores the evolving landscape of seatingfrom ergonomic office chairs to publicspace benches and futuristic transport seats. Since its inception in 2008, the symposium has grown into a premier platform for sharing scientific research, design innovations, market trends, and policy insights that shape how people sit around the world.

Why seating matters:

  • Health: Poor posture contributes to musculoskeletal disorders, back pain, and reduced productivity.
  • Productivity: Comfortable work environments boost focus and employee satisfaction.
  • Social interaction: Public seating influences urban livability and community cohesion.
  • Environmental impact: Materials, manufacturing processes, and lifespan affect carbon footprints.

This years theme, Seated Tomorrow: Health, Design, and the Planet, invites participants to examine the interdisciplinary challenges that lie ahead and to propose actionable solutions.
